A refined woodcut by Aristide Maillol, depicting a scene from the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe with clean, sculptural lines.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol depicts a scene from the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, applied a similar focus on simplified form and classical harmony to his graphic work. The composition features two figures within a grotto, rendered with clean, decisive lines that strip away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential contours of the human form.
Maillol produced a series of woodcuts for an edition of Longus's Daphnis and Chloe, published by Henri Creuzevault in 1937. His approach to the medium is direct, utilising the stark contrast between black ink and white paper to define the figures against a minimal background of foliage. The interaction between the two characters is gentle, reflecting the pastoral themes of the original text. The figures possess the rounded, solid qualities characteristic of Maillol's sculptural style, translated here into a two-dimensional graphic language.
The work demonstrates a return to classical simplicity, a hallmark of Maillol's artistic output during the early twentieth century. By avoiding complex shading or perspective, he allows the viewer to focus on the rhythmic arrangement of the figures and the organic shapes of the surrounding environment. This print offers a clear example of how the artist adapted his interest in the Mediterranean tradition to the constraints and possibilities of the woodcut medium, resulting in a balanced and harmonious image that remains faithful to the spirit of the ancient narrative.
