A refined Baroque depiction of the biblical meeting at Jacob's Well, painted by the Italian master Benedetto Luti in the early eighteenth century.

Benedetto Luti, a Florentine painter who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this depiction of the biblical encounter at Jacob's Well. The scene captures the moment of dialogue between Christ and the Samaritan woman, a subject frequently explored by artists of the late Baroque period. Luti employs a balanced composition, placing the two figures on opposite sides of the stone well, which acts as a physical and thematic centre for their interaction.

The woman is shown with a copper vessel, her posture suggesting a pause in her daily labour to listen to the seated figure of Christ. Christ is rendered in his traditional red and blue robes, his hands gesturing as he speaks. The background features a classical architectural element, specifically a column, which provides a sense of scale and historical grounding. Beyond the immediate foreground, a soft, atmospheric view of a distant town and mountains recedes into the horizon, characteristic of Luti's interest in light and spatial depth.

Luti's technique demonstrates the transition from the heavy chiaroscuro of the seventeenth century toward the lighter, more refined palette that would define the early eighteenth century. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the metallic sheen of the water vessel. The lighting is soft, avoiding harsh contrasts, which allows the focus to remain on the facial expressions and the quiet intensity of the exchange.
