A detailed 1523 engraving by Dirk Vellert depicting the biblical meeting of Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well.
This engraving by Dirk Vellert, dated 1523, depicts the biblical encounter between Christ and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. Vellert, a prominent figure in the Antwerp school of the early sixteenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency through precise line work and a balanced composition. The scene centres on the well, with Christ positioned on the left and the woman on the right, her hand resting upon the bucket. A water vessel sits prominently in the foreground, resting on a stone block marked with the artist's monogram, D-V, and a star.
The background features a distant townscape and rolling hills, typical of the Northern Renaissance interest in integrating narrative figures with atmospheric settings. Vellert employs a variety of hatching techniques to create volume in the drapery of the figures and the texture of the stone well. The interaction is quiet and focused, capturing the moment of theological exchange described in the Gospel of John. The inclusion of secondary figures in the far left distance adds a sense of depth to the composition, drawing the eye across the plane. As a master of the small-scale print, Vellert brings a high degree of detail to the facial expressions and the physical environment, reflecting the stylistic conventions of the period. This work is a clear example of the refined printmaking practices prevalent in Antwerp during the early sixteenth century, where artists often combined religious subject matter with a sophisticated approach to perspective and form.
