A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicting the biblical scene of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical account of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas. The composition centres on the figure of the resurrected Christ, who holds a banner and gestures towards the wound in his side. Before him, the apostle Thomas kneels, reaching out to touch the mark, a moment of transition from doubt to recognition. The surrounding disciples are arranged in a semi-circular formation, their expressions and postures conveying a range of reactions to the miraculous appearance.
The work is characteristic of the Northern Renaissance style, featuring precise line work and a clear, didactic narrative structure. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical clarity and expressive gesture, typical of the period's approach to religious iconography. The inclusion of Latin text below the image, followed by a detailed French commentary, suggests this print originated from a devotional book or a series intended for scholarly and religious instruction. The hand-applied colour adds a layer of warmth to the scene, distinguishing the figures from the architectural background of the room.
Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates a mastery of the burin, creating distinct textures in the drapery and the architectural elements. The perspective is relatively shallow, keeping the focus on the interaction between Christ and his followers. The work provides a window into the visual culture of the sixteenth century, where such prints functioned as portable aids for contemplation and theological study. The careful preservation of the surrounding page, complete with handwritten annotations, offers a glimpse into the historical use of this print as an object of private devotion.
