A 1519 engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicting the Noli me tangere scene with technical precision and narrative focus.
This engraving by Lucas van Leyden, dated 1519, depicts the Noli me tangere scene from the New Testament. The composition shows the resurrected Christ, dressed in the attire of a gardener, gesturing towards Mary Magdalene. She kneels before him, holding an ointment jar, her expression one of recognition and reverence. The artist employs a sophisticated use of line to define the textures of the clothing, the rocky outcrop, and the distant landscape.
Van Leyden was a master of the burin, and this work demonstrates his ability to create atmospheric depth through varied hatching techniques. The figures occupy the foreground, while the background reveals a small, detailed townscape and a group of figures in the distance. The artist includes his characteristic 'L' monogram on the left side of the print. The scene captures a moment of quiet interaction, focusing on the emotional connection between the two figures rather than grand spectacle.
The technical precision seen here is typical of the Northern Renaissance printmaking tradition. Van Leyden manages to balance the human scale of the figures with the surrounding environment. The drapery of the garments is rendered with careful attention to light and shadow, providing a sense of volume and weight. This print remains a fine example of early sixteenth-century Dutch graphic art, reflecting the period's interest in both biblical narrative and the development of print as a medium for artistic expression. The work is held in several major museum collections, including the British Museum and the Rijksmuseum, where it is studied for its contribution to the development of perspective and tonal range in engraving.
