A powerful 1511 woodcut by Albrecht Dürer from his Large Passion series, depicting the mocking of Christ with precise line work and anatomical detail.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, dated 1511, depicts the Man of Sorrows seated upon a stone block, his hands bound. A soldier kneels before him, holding a reed as a mock sceptre. The composition belongs to the series known as the Large Passion, a collection of woodcuts that Dürer produced to explore the narrative of Christ's final days.
Dürer employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the stone. The soldier, rendered with a rugged, aggressive posture, contrasts with the stillness of Christ. The background is minimal, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the two figures. The crown of thorns is rendered with sharp, precise lines, and the halo surrounding Christ's head is composed of radiating strokes that suggest light.
The work demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the woodcut medium, a technique he elevated through his ability to translate the tonal qualities of drawing into the rigid constraints of woodblock carving. The anatomical accuracy of the figures reflects his interest in the proportions and human form that he studied during his travels in Italy. This print remains a significant example of early sixteenth-century German printmaking, showing the technical rigour and narrative clarity that defined Dürer's output. The scene captures a moment of quiet suffering, stripped of extraneous detail to focus on the emotional weight of the encounter. The use of line to create shadow and volume allows the figures to emerge from the paper with a sense of physical presence, a hallmark of Dürer's approach to graphic art.
