A detailed 1853 engraving by Thomas Casimir Regnault depicting the biblical scene of Christ falling under the weight of the cross.
This engraving by Thomas Casimir Regnault, dated 1853, depicts the biblical narrative of the Way of the Cross. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, who has fallen under the weight of the wooden cross. His posture is one of exhaustion, yet his expression remains composed. A figure stands behind him, assisting with the burden, while Roman soldiers and onlookers surround the scene. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of mid-nineteenth-century French printmaking, prioritising anatomical accuracy and balanced proportions.
The work demonstrates the technical precision of the engraving process. Regnault uses varying densities of line to create depth and shadow, particularly in the folds of the drapery and the architectural elements of the background. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, a common device in Neoclassical art to maintain clarity and focus on the narrative action. The soldiers, clad in period-appropriate armour, provide a contrast to the flowing robes of the other figures, adding texture to the overall image.
Regnault was a skilled engraver who often interpreted the works of other painters, though this piece reflects the broader academic tradition of the period. The scene is devoid of excessive ornamentation, allowing the viewer to focus on the emotional weight of the event. The lighting is even, casting soft shadows that define the forms without resorting to dramatic chiaroscuro. This print serves as a representative example of the religious iconography produced for a public audience during the mid-nineteenth century, maintaining a formal dignity through its controlled execution and structured composition.
