A powerful depiction of Christ as the Saviour of the World, rendered in the distinctive, expressive style of El Greco.
This work depicts Christ as the Saviour of the World, a subject known in art history as Salvator Mundi. El Greco presents the figure in a half-length composition, his right hand raised in a gesture of benediction while his left hand rests upon a crystal orb. The orb represents the cosmos, reflecting the light and the surrounding environment through its translucent surface.
El Greco employs his characteristic elongated proportions and expressive brushwork to convey a sense of spiritual intensity. The figure of Christ emerges from a dark, atmospheric background, which directs the viewer's focus entirely to his face and hands. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds and cool blues, contrasted against the pale, luminous skin tones of the subject. The light source appears to emanate from within the figure, creating a halo effect around the head that separates the subject from the gloom of the setting.
This painting is part of a series produced by the artist and his workshop during his later years in Toledo. The brushwork is fluid and rapid, typical of the artist's mature style, where form is defined more by light and shadow than by rigid outlines. The gaze of Christ is directed towards the viewer, establishing a direct connection that invites contemplation. The drapery of the robes is rendered with loose, sweeping strokes, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise static pose. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to blend Byzantine iconographic traditions with the dramatic lighting techniques of the Venetian school, resulting in a highly individual approach to religious imagery. The work remains a primary example of the artist's late period, where his focus shifted towards the ethereal and the visionary.
