A 1525 engraving by Flemish artist Dirck Vellert, depicting the biblical scene of Christ calling his disciples near a ship.
This engraving by the Flemish master Dirck Vellert, dated 1525, depicts the biblical narrative of Christ summoning his first disciples. Vellert, a contemporary of Lucas van Leyden, was a prominent figure in the Antwerp school, known for his technical precision in printmaking and stained glass design. The composition is divided between the foreground interaction and the nautical setting behind.
In the foreground, Christ stands on the shore, gesturing towards Peter, who kneels in the surf. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical structure and the fall of drapery, characteristic of the period. Behind them, a large vessel occupies the upper portion of the frame. The ship is depicted with a high degree of detail, showing the rigging, the hull, and the figures of other sailors on deck. The waves are stylised, creating a sense of movement that contrasts with the stability of the figures on land.
Vellert employs a fine hatching technique to create depth and shadow, particularly in the folds of the garments and the texture of the water. The sky is filled with clouds that suggest a breezy, coastal atmosphere. The date and the artist's monogram are visible in the upper right corner, typical of the period's printmaking conventions. This work demonstrates the influence of Dürer and other German masters on the Flemish print tradition, while maintaining the specific stylistic traits of the Antwerp circle. The print offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the early sixteenth century, where narrative clarity and technical mastery were held in high regard. Collectors of Northern Renaissance art will appreciate the balance between the human drama in the foreground and the technical execution of the maritime elements.
