A Renaissance depiction of Christ carrying the cross, attributed to the Venetian painter Girolamo da Santacroce.
This work by Girolamo da Santacroce depicts the moment of Christ bearing the cross towards Calvary. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the period, placing the central figure in a kneeling posture under the weight of the timber. To the left, the Virgin Mary and other figures observe the event with expressions of sorrow. The background features a fortified city wall and architectural elements typical of Venetian painting from the early sixteenth century.
Girolamo da Santacroce was active in Venice, where he absorbed the influence of Giovanni Bellini and Cima da Conegliano. His approach to figure painting is characterised by clear outlines and a balanced distribution of colour. The drapery of the garments is rendered with attention to volume, creating a sense of weight and movement. The golden haloes are applied with a decorative sensibility, reflecting the lingering influence of earlier devotional traditions within the Venetian school.
The scene is constructed with a focus on narrative clarity. The soldiers positioned near the gate provide a contrast to the mourning group, establishing a tension between the secular authority and the sacred subject. The landscape elements, including the distant hills and structures, are painted with a degree of stylisation that directs the viewer's attention back to the primary action in the foreground. This print captures the specific tonal qualities of the original panel, preserving the muted palette and the precise brushwork of the artist. It offers a view into the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical commissions in the Veneto region during the Renaissance.
