A detailed 1512 engraving by Albrecht Dürer from his Engraved Passion series, depicting the humiliation of Christ.
This engraving is part of the Engraved Passion series, a collection of fifteen plates produced by Albrecht Dürer between 1507 and 1513. The work depicts the moment of Christ's humiliation, where soldiers press a crown of thorns onto his head using long reeds. Dürer employs his mastery of the burin to create a dense network of lines, which define the musculature of the figures and the texture of their garments. The composition is tightly packed, focusing the viewer's attention on the central interaction between the seated Christ and his tormentors.
The artist uses light and shadow to model form, creating a sense of volume within the confined space. The figure of Christ remains calm, contrasting with the aggressive postures of the soldiers surrounding him. Dürer includes his characteristic monogram at the bottom left, alongside the date 1512, which is also inscribed on a tablet in the upper right corner. The precision of the line work allows for a high degree of detail, from the individual thorns to the folds in the fabric of the soldiers' tunics. This print demonstrates the technical capability of the artist in the medium of copperplate engraving, a craft he helped elevate during the early sixteenth century. The work remains a primary example of the narrative clarity and technical rigour associated with the German Renaissance.
