A detailed etching by Rembrandt van Rijn depicting the dramatic biblical scene of Christ cleansing the Temple.
This etching depicts the biblical account of Christ cleansing the Temple in Jerusalem. Rembrandt van Rijn captures the chaotic moment as Christ, positioned centrally, wields a scourge to disperse the merchants and money changers. The composition is dense with activity: figures scramble to gather their coins, animals scatter, and the architecture of the temple provides a structured backdrop to the human drama.
Rembrandt employs his characteristic mastery of light and shadow to direct the viewer's eye. The figure of Christ is illuminated, contrasting with the darker, more cluttered areas where the merchants operate. The etching technique allows for a variety of line weights, from the fine cross-hatching that defines the vaulted ceiling to the bolder, more urgent strokes used to render the figures in motion. The inclusion of everyday details, such as the overturned table and the barrel, grounds the scene in a tangible reality, a common trait in Rembrandt's approach to historical and religious subjects.
Henry Louis Basan, a later publisher, acquired many of Rembrandt's original copper plates in the late 18th century. This print is an impression from one of those plates, which had been reworked over time. The image remains a study in human reaction and divine authority, rendered with the technical precision that defines the Dutch master's graphic work. The interplay between the architectural space and the crowded foreground creates a sense of depth and urgency, drawing the viewer into the narrative tension of the event. The work reflects the artist's ability to imbue traditional religious iconography with a sense of immediate, human experience, avoiding static or overly formalised depictions in favour of dynamic, emotive storytelling.
