A dramatic depiction of the Cleansing of the Temple, featuring the elongated figures and expressive brushwork characteristic of El Greco's Mannerist style.
This work depicts the biblical narrative of the Cleansing of the Temple, a subject El Greco returned to multiple times throughout his career. The composition is organised around the central figure of Christ, whose raised arm and dynamic posture create a sense of immediate action. He is surrounded by a crowd of figures whose contorted bodies and expressive gestures reflect the artist's characteristic Mannerist style.
The palette consists of cool blues, deep crimsons, and ochre yellows, applied with the loose, gestural brushwork that defines the artist's later period. The architectural setting, visible through the archway in the background, provides a sense of depth while maintaining the compressed, theatrical space typical of his work. The figures are elongated, with anatomy that prioritises emotional intensity over strict naturalistic proportion. Light does not follow a single source but appears to emanate from within the scene, casting dramatic shadows and highlighting the agitation of the traders as they flee the temple.
El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos, moved from Crete to Italy before settling in Toledo, Spain. His work often synthesises Byzantine iconographic traditions with the influence of Venetian colourists and the dramatic tension of the Italian Renaissance. This particular version of the subject demonstrates his ability to manage complex, multi-figure compositions while maintaining a singular focus on the spiritual authority of the central subject. The painting invites close observation of the individual reactions of the figures, from the surprise of the merchants to the focused resolve of Christ. It remains a primary example of how the artist manipulated form and colour to convey theological themes through a highly personal visual language.
