This etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo depicts the ninth station of the cross, showing Christ collapsing under the weight of the cross. The work demonstrates Tiepolo's skill as a printmaker and his engagement with religious subject matter.
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804) was a Venetian painter and printmaker, the son of the celebrated artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Domenico, as he was known, assisted his father on many important commissions, including the frescoes at the Würzburg Residence and the Royal Palace of Madrid. He developed his own distinct style, characterised by its narrative clarity and often humorous or satirical undertones. 'Christ Falls for the Third Time' is an etching that depicts the ninth station of the cross. The scene shows Christ collapsing under the weight of the cross, surrounded by onlookers and Roman soldiers. The composition is dynamic, with a sense of movement and emotional intensity. Tiepolo's use of line is particularly effective, creating a sense of depth and texture. The etching is part of a series illustrating the Stations of the Cross, reflecting the artist's engagement with religious themes and his mastery of printmaking techniques.
