A detailed woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting the Agony in the Garden, featuring Christ in prayer and his sleeping disciples.
This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts the Agony in the Garden, a subject drawn from the New Testament. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the upper centre, Christ kneels in prayer, his arms raised toward a small group of angels who appear within a cloud formation. One angel holds a chalice, while another bears a cross, symbols of the impending Passion. The lower portion of the print shows the three disciples, Peter, James, and John, overcome by sleep. Their heavy, slumped postures contrast with the spiritual intensity of the central figure.
Cranach employs a dense, graphic style characteristic of early sixteenth-century German printmaking. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates volume in the drapery of the figures and texture in the rocky terrain. The background features a winding path where soldiers approach with torches, signalling the arrival of Judas and the arrest of Christ. This narrative inclusion adds a sense of urgency to the scene. The artist's monogram, LC, is visible in the lower right corner, a mark of his workshop production during his early period in Wittenberg.
The work demonstrates the technical precision of the woodcut medium, where every line must be carved with care to ensure clarity in the final impression. The stark contrast between the dark, shadowed areas and the lighter, highlighted forms provides a dramatic quality to the biblical event. This print is a representative example of the devotional imagery produced for a public audience during the Northern Renaissance, combining theological narrative with the stylistic conventions of the era. The composition balances the quietude of the sleeping disciples with the looming threat of the approaching figures in the distance, capturing a moment of transition before the final events of the Passion.
