A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Brosamer depicting the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John.
This engraving by Hans Brosamer depicts the Crucifixion, a subject central to the visual culture of the Northern Renaissance. Brosamer, a German artist active in the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the precise application of line and shadow. The composition follows a traditional iconographic arrangement: Christ occupies the centre, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist.
Above the cross, putti emerge from clouds, holding tablets inscribed with Latin and Hebrew text. These elements provide theological context, referencing passages from Isaiah and the Gospel of John. The inclusion of these textual components is characteristic of the period, where printmaking functioned as a medium for both artistic expression and the dissemination of religious doctrine. At the base of the cross, a skull rests on the ground, a memento mori symbolising mortality and the triumph of the spirit over death.
Brosamer utilises a disciplined approach to shading, employing fine hatching to define the musculature of the central figure and the folds of the garments worn by the flanking saints. The contrast between the stark white paper and the dark, etched lines creates a sense of depth and volume. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy, typical of the influence exerted by Dürer and his contemporaries on German printmakers of the era. This work reflects the technical rigour of the sixteenth-century print workshop, where the engraver balanced narrative clarity with decorative detail. The print serves as an example of the small-scale devotional imagery that circulated widely among collectors and the faithful during the Reformation period, offering a meditative focus on the central event of Christian theology.
