A detailed 1553 engraving by German Little Master Heinrich Aldegrever, depicting the Crucifixion with theological inscriptions and precise line work.
Heinrich Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, produced this engraving in 1553. The work displays the technical precision characteristic of German printmaking during the sixteenth century. The central figure of Christ occupies the vertical axis, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. A small figure, likely Mary Magdalene, kneels at the base of the cross, positioned near a skull and bone, which serve as traditional memento mori symbols.
The composition incorporates two prominent tablets containing Latin inscriptions from Isaiah and the Gospel of John. These texts provide a theological framework for the scene, connecting the Old Testament prophecy with the New Testament narrative. Aldegrever employs a dense system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of Christ and the heavy folds of the drapery worn by the mourners. The background features a subtle, distant view of a town, which provides a sense of scale and spatial depth behind the primary figures.
As a Little Master, Aldegrever was known for his small-scale, highly detailed engravings that were often collected by connoisseurs of the period. This print demonstrates his ability to manage complex narrative elements within a confined space. The lines are sharp and controlled, reflecting the influence of Albrecht Dürer on the subsequent generation of German engravers. The inclusion of Greek text at the bottom edge adds a scholarly dimension to the piece, typical of the humanist interests prevalent in Northern Europe at the time. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved by printmakers working in Westphalia during the mid-sixteenth century.
