A detailed Northern Renaissance scene by Wolf Traut, depicting the emotional departure of Christ from his mother amidst a lush, naturalistic setting.
Wolf Traut, a member of the Nuremberg school and a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer, produced this work during the early sixteenth century. The painting depicts the narrative moment of Christ bidding farewell to the Virgin Mary before his journey to Jerusalem. The composition is divided between the emotional intensity of the figures on the left and the expansive, detailed natural environment on the right.
The Virgin Mary is shown in a state of collapse, supported by the holy women, while Christ stands in a calm, upright posture. His gesture directs the viewer towards the path ahead. Traut employs a characteristic Northern Renaissance approach to detail, particularly in the rendering of the foliage and the architectural ruins that frame the scene. The trees are painted with individualised attention to leaf structure and bark texture, creating a dense, vertical backdrop that contrasts with the open sky.
The colour palette is dominated by deep, saturated tones. Christ wears a heavy crimson robe, which provides a visual anchor for the composition. The surrounding figures are dressed in garments of olive green, pale blue, and soft white, reflecting the typical colour harmonies found in German panel painting of this period. The inclusion of small, donor-like figures in the bottom right corner is a traditional device, linking the sacred event to the contemporary world of the patron.
This work demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Nuremberg circle. The treatment of light, particularly the way it catches the folds of the drapery and the distant mountain peaks, suggests a careful observation of natural phenomena. The architectural elements, showing signs of decay and overgrowth, add a layer of melancholy to the scene, reinforcing the gravity of the departure. This print captures the fine details of the original oil panel, maintaining the clarity of the brushwork and the depth of the atmospheric perspective.
