A precise 1546 engraving by German artist Sebald Beham, depicting Christ standing upon the globe within a celestial mandorla.
This engraving by Sebald Beham, dated 1546, depicts the figure of Christ standing upon the globe, a traditional representation of his dominion over the world. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was highly skilled in the production of small-scale, precise prints that circulated widely across Europe during the sixteenth century. His work reflects the technical rigour common to the Nuremberg school of printmaking.
The composition is contained within an oval mandorla, a classic device used to signify divinity. Christ is shown with his right hand raised in benediction, while his left hand supports a cross-staff bearing a banner. The surrounding space is filled with cherubic heads emerging from clouds, and the Holy Spirit, represented as a dove, descends from above. The German inscription, 'MIR IST GEBEN ALLER GWALT IM HIMEL VND ERDEN' (All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth), encircles the central figure, reinforcing the theological theme of the work.
Beham employs fine, controlled hatching to model the musculature of the figure and the folds of the drapery. This technique creates a sense of volume and texture despite the small dimensions of the original plate. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition demonstrate the artist's mastery of the burin. As a printmaker, Beham was instrumental in the dissemination of humanist and religious imagery, making such works accessible to a broader audience beyond the elite. This piece remains a clear example of the technical precision and iconographic conventions that defined the German print tradition during the Reformation era.
