A contemplative ink and wash drawing by Willem van Oordt depicting the biblical meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus.
This work by the Dutch artist Willem van Oordt depicts the biblical encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus. The scene captures the quiet, nocturnal dialogue described in the Gospel of John, where the Pharisee visits Jesus to discuss spiritual rebirth. Van Oordt employs a monochromatic wash technique to establish a sombre, contemplative atmosphere, typical of nineteenth-century Dutch academic studies of religious themes.
The composition focuses on the two figures seated at a simple table. Jesus is positioned on the left, his posture relaxed yet authoritative, while Nicodemus sits opposite, his expression suggesting a state of inquiry or hesitation. The artist uses light and shadow to define the forms, with the wash providing depth to the drapery of their garments and the surrounding architectural elements. A faint, ghostly silhouette appears in the background, adding a layer of ambiguity to the otherwise intimate setting. The drawing demonstrates a clear interest in the psychological tension between the two men, rather than an elaborate display of setting or ornament.
Van Oordt, active during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, often engaged with traditional subjects, applying a restrained approach to line and tone. The signature in the lower right corner confirms the authorship of this piece. The paper shows signs of age, with subtle discolouration that complements the sepia-toned ink. This print offers a view into the artist's process, showing how he used wash to build volume and mood before finalising a composition. It is a study of human interaction, rendered with a focus on the quiet gravity of the moment.
