A hand-coloured woodcut by Doen Pietersz. depicting the Agony in the Garden, characteristic of early sixteenth-century Dutch religious illustration.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the Agony in the Garden, a traditional subject in Christian iconography. The composition shows Christ kneeling in prayer, his gaze directed upwards, while his disciples sleep in the foreground. The scene is rendered with the characteristic graphic economy of early sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking, where bold outlines define the figures and the surrounding terrain.
Pietersz. was active in Amsterdam during the early decades of the sixteenth century. His work often appeared in devotional books, which were produced for a growing market of literate laypeople. The woodcut medium allowed for the mass production of such imagery, making religious narratives accessible to a wider audience. The application of colour, likely added by hand after the initial printing, provides a clear distinction between the figures and the landscape elements, such as the trees and the undulating ground.
The figures are arranged in a manner that emphasises the emotional distance between the wakeful Christ and the slumbering apostles. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques creates a sense of volume within the garments, despite the relative flatness of the overall pictorial space. The inclusion of a small, indistinct group of figures in the background suggests the approaching soldiers, adding a narrative layer to the quiet scene. This print reflects the aesthetic conventions of the period, prioritising clear storytelling and devotional clarity over naturalistic perspective. The work remains a representative example of the woodcut illustrations found in Dutch prayer books of the era, offering a glimpse into the visual culture of the Northern Renaissance.
