A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut by Dutch printer Doen Pietersz., depicting the biblical trial of Christ before Caiaphas.
This hand-coloured woodcut depicts the biblical scene of Christ standing before the high priest Caiaphas. The composition follows the conventions of early sixteenth-century Dutch book illustration, where narrative clarity takes precedence over spatial depth. Christ is shown in the centre, his hands bound, flanked by soldiers in contemporary sixteenth-century armour. Caiaphas sits to the right, wearing a mitre and robes, his posture suggesting a formal interrogation.
The woodcut technique is characterised by bold, clear outlines that define the figures and their garments. The application of colour, likely added by hand shortly after printing, uses a limited palette of red, green, and ochre to distinguish the characters and provide visual interest. The background is minimal, consisting of a simple brick-like pattern that suggests an interior setting without providing complex architectural detail.
Doen Pietersz. was an active printer and publisher in Amsterdam during the early sixteenth century. His work often appeared in devotional texts and popular religious literature of the period. This print reflects the style of Northern Renaissance woodcuts, which were produced for a wide audience and intended to make religious narratives accessible through visual storytelling. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and expression, typical of the period's approach to humanising sacred subjects. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between early printing technology and the dissemination of religious imagery in the Netherlands. The physical condition of the print, as seen in the surrounding page margins, indicates its original purpose as an illustration within a bound volume, preserving the context of its production and consumption.
