A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut by Dutch artist Doen Pietersz., depicting the biblical narrative of Christ before Pontius Pilate.
This hand-coloured woodcut depicts the biblical scene of Christ before Pontius Pilate. Attributed to the Dutch printer and woodcutter Doen Pietersz., who operated in Amsterdam during the early sixteenth century, the work reflects the stylistic conventions of Northern Renaissance book illustration. The composition focuses on the central confrontation: Christ, dressed in simple robes, stands before Pilate, who is seated upon an elevated dais.
The artist employs a clear, narrative structure common to devotional texts of the period. The figures are rendered with bold, defined outlines, typical of woodblock printing techniques where the image is carved in relief. The use of hand-applied colour, likely added shortly after the initial printing, provides a distinct visual character to the scene. The palette includes muted tones of red, green, and ochre, which serve to differentiate the figures and architectural elements within the confined space.
Pietersz. was known for his contributions to the production of popular religious literature in the Netherlands. His work often appeared in small-format books intended for private study or prayer. This specific print demonstrates the functional nature of such imagery, where the primary objective is the clear communication of a theological narrative. The architectural setting, while simplified, provides a sense of depth and authority to the scene. The inclusion of a monogram in the lower right corner is a characteristic feature of the period, identifying the workshop or the individual responsible for the block. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the early Reformation era, where printed images played a role in the dissemination of religious stories to a wider audience beyond the clergy.
