A colour etching by Camille Pissarro, 'Church and Farm at Eragny' captures a tranquil rural scene with delicate lines and subtle colours, reflecting his Impressionist style and interest in light and atmosphere.
Camille Pissarro, a central figure of French Impressionism, created this colour etching depicting the church and farm in Éragny, a commune in northern France where he lived from 1884 until his death in 1903. Pissarro was drawn to rural subjects, often depicting the French countryside and peasant life. His Impressionist style is characterised by the use of small, thin brushstrokes to capture the fleeting qualities of light and atmosphere. He was interested in depicting the effects of light and weather on the scene. This print shows a view of the church and farm buildings, with grazing cows in the foreground. Two figures stand near the centre of the composition. The sky transitions from a pale yellow to a soft pink, suggesting either sunrise or sunset. The scene is rendered with delicate lines and subtle gradations of colour, typical of Pissarro's printmaking. The composition is carefully balanced, with the church spire providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the fields.
