A detailed etching of the Romanesque portal at the Church of the Holy Cross in Saint-Lô, captured by John Sell Cotman in 1822.
This etching by John Sell Cotman depicts the Romanesque portal of the Church of the Holy Cross in Saint-Lô, Normandy. Produced for his publication, Architectural Antiquities of Normandy, the work demonstrates Cotman's precise observation of medieval masonry and sculptural detail. The composition focuses on the arched doorway, framed by chevron mouldings and carved figures that reflect the distinct regional style of Norman architecture.
Cotman employed a rigorous etching technique to capture the texture of the weathered stone blocks and the depth of the recessed entrance. The play of light and shadow across the facade provides a sense of volume, while the inclusion of small figures flanking the arch adds a human scale to the imposing structure. His approach to architectural documentation prioritised clarity and structural accuracy, making this print a valuable record of the site during the early nineteenth century.
As a member of the Norwich School of painters, Cotman was known for his ability to translate complex architectural forms into graphic compositions. This print is characteristic of his later career, during which he focused heavily on antiquarian subjects. The work avoids unnecessary embellishment, instead relying on the strength of the line and the balance of the composition to convey the character of the building. The print offers a view into the historical interest in European heritage that defined much of the British artistic output of the period.
