A powerful marine study by George Bellows, capturing the turbulent energy of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the Maine coastline.
George Bellows produced this work during a period of intense focus on the coastal waters of Monhegan Island, Maine. The painting captures the raw energy of the Atlantic Ocean, specifically the moment a wave strikes the rocky shoreline. Bellows employs thick, gestural brushwork to convey the physical force of the water, moving away from the smoother surfaces of his earlier urban scenes.
The composition is dominated by the contrast between the dark, solid forms of the rocks in the foreground and the luminous, aerated foam of the breaking wave. Bellows uses a palette of deep greens, greys, and stark whites to define the movement of the sea. The light catches the crest of the wave, creating a sense of volume and weight that defines the artist's approach to marine subjects. By focusing on the immediate interaction between water and land, Bellows avoids romanticised depictions of the sea, opting instead for a direct, observational style.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the physical properties of paint as a medium for representing natural phenomena. The application of pigment is heavy and deliberate, mirroring the turbulence of the subject matter. Bellows spent several summers on Monhegan Island, where he developed a rigorous method of studying the sea under varying weather conditions. This painting is one of many produced during these visits, demonstrating his ability to translate the chaotic motion of the ocean into a structured, coherent image. The absence of human figures shifts the focus entirely to the elemental power of the environment, a recurring theme in his later work.
