The composition is designed for the specific format of a folding fan, with the willow branches sweeping across the surface to create a sense of movement and natural balance. The cicada, perched on a branch, is rendered with precise, economical brushwork, reflecting the artist's mastery of ink control.
Wu Xizai is widely recognised for his skill in seal script, and this expertise informs the calligraphic quality of his brushstrokes in this work. The willow leaves are depicted with varying tones of ink, suggesting depth and the play of light without relying on heavy shading.
