This textile fragment displays a circular medallion, a common decorative element in Late Antique garments. The design features a central star-like motif surrounded by a complex interlace pattern. This geometric arrangement is typical of Coptic textiles, which were produced in Egypt during the transition from the Roman to the Byzantine period. The contrast between the dark, woven wool of the medallion and the lighter linen ground fabric is a hallmark of this weaving tradition.
The interlace work demonstrates a high level of technical skill, with the threads forming a continuous, rhythmic pattern that draws the eye toward the centre. Such medallions, often referred to as 'orbiculi', were frequently applied to tunics as shoulder or knee decorations.
