A detailed topographical watercolour by David Roberts, capturing the city of Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee as observed during his 1839 travels.
This work depicts the ancient city of Tiberias, situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. David Roberts, a Scottish painter known for his extensive travels through the Near East, captured this view during his 1839 expedition. The composition employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the fortified walls of the city, the minaret, and the expansive water surface stretching toward the distant, arid hills.
Roberts utilised a delicate watercolour technique to render the atmospheric conditions of the region. The palette consists of muted ochres, soft blues, and earthy browns, which accurately reflect the sun-drenched terrain of the Levant. In the foreground, a group of figures rests upon a rocky outcrop, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the vast, quiet geography. The artist balanced the architectural details of the city with the sweeping, open forms of the surrounding hills, demonstrating his skill in topographical observation.
This piece belongs to a series of sketches and finished watercolours that Roberts produced to document the biblical and historical sites of the Holy Land. His work provided nineteenth-century British audiences with a visual record of regions that were then largely inaccessible to the general public. The precision of the drawing, combined with the subtle washes of colour, captures the stillness of the scene. It remains a precise historical record of the site as it appeared in the mid-nineteenth century, before the significant urban expansion that occurred in later decades. The work is characteristic of the period's interest in documenting distant cultures and historical geographies through a disciplined, observational approach.
