A dreamlike etching by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, featuring towering spires reaching into a heavy, atmospheric sky.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian composer and painter, occupies a unique position in early twentieth-century European art. His work often bridges the gap between visual representation and musical structure. In this etching, titled City (Towers), the artist presents a dreamlike architectural vision that avoids literal depiction in favour of atmospheric suggestion. The composition is dominated by vertical spires that reach toward a heavy, cloud-filled sky, creating a sense of scale that feels both monumental and fragile.
The technique employed here relies on the textural possibilities of etching and aquatint. Dark, dense lines define the silhouettes of the towers, while the lighter, washed areas suggest the ethereal quality of the atmosphere. The contrast between the sharp, needle-like architecture and the soft, amorphous clouds reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of the physical world and the subconscious. Unlike the rigid urban scenes of his contemporaries, this city appears to emerge from the paper itself, as if it were a memory or a fleeting thought captured in ink.
Čiurlionis often explored themes of cosmic order and mythology. In this piece, the city functions as a symbol rather than a specific geographic location. The verticality of the spires draws the eye upward, reinforcing a sense of aspiration or spiritual longing. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep blues, browns, and pale ochre tones, maintains a sombre, contemplative mood. This work offers a glimpse into the artist's ability to synthesise disparate elements into a cohesive, evocative image. It remains a fine example of his graphic output, demonstrating his technical control over the etching process and his distinct approach to composition.
