Description
Cleadale on Highland Eigg gathers white cottages beneath a cloud capped cliff, with a winding lane and sunlit green crofts giving this island settlement a strong sense of scale.
Cleadale is Eigg’s principal settlement, occupying the fertile coastal plain below Beinn Buidhe in the north of the island. The plateau falls steeply towards the crofting ground on its western side. Nearby Laig Bay and the Singing Sands connect this inhabited strip with the island’s varied coast.
A narrow grey road curves downhill past scattered white houses and bright fields. Dark trees gather around the cottages, while the long cliff wall behind them disappears into a low bank of cloud. The right hand slope is studded with exposed grey rock. Lush grass and fresh foliage suggest summer, with strong patches of sunlight opening through the mist.
