A detailed 19th-century engraving by Giovanni Rivera depicting the dramatic final moments of Cleopatra.
This engraving by Giovanni Rivera depicts the final moments of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. The subject is a classic trope in Western art, drawing upon historical accounts of the queen choosing suicide over capture by Octavian. Rivera employs a highly controlled technique, using fine lines and cross-hatching to build volume and texture within the drapery and the figure of the queen.
The composition is structured around the central figure, who is shown in a moment of dramatic resignation. Her gaze is directed upwards, away from the asp held in her hand. The lighting is theatrical, casting deep shadows that define the folds of the fabric and the contours of the body. A basket of figs, a traditional attribute associated with the legend of the asp's concealment, sits on a table to the left. The inclusion of the royal crest at the bottom of the print suggests this was a formal production, likely intended for a sophisticated audience familiar with classical iconography.
Rivera, an Italian engraver, demonstrates a technical precision typical of mid-nineteenth-century printmaking. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the emotional weight of the narrative. The contrast between the smooth skin of the figure and the heavy, dark drapery creates a sense of depth and focus. This piece provides a clear example of how classical themes were interpreted through the medium of engraving during the period, prioritising clarity of form and narrative legibility. The print is presented on high-quality paper, maintaining the integrity of the original plate marks and the subtle tonal gradations achieved by the artist.
