Gustave Courbet, a central figure in the French Realist movement, frequently returned to his native Franche-Comté for inspiration. This work depicts the rugged topography surrounding Ornans, a region defined by its limestone cliffs and deep valleys. Courbet applied paint with a palette knife, a technique that creates a tactile, physical quality on the canvas surface. This method allows for the construction of rock formations through thick, layered impasto, which contrasts with the smoother, more fluid treatment of the water and sky.

The composition focuses on the geological structure of the terrain.
