A fluid ink and wash study of the Zytglogge in Bern, captured with the characteristic angularity and expressive line work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
This work captures the Zytglogge, the medieval clock tower in Bern, through the distinct lens of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Created during his period of residence in Switzerland, the drawing reflects his move away from the frenetic energy of his earlier Berlin street scenes toward a more contemplative, albeit still angular, observation of his surroundings. Kirchner employs a fluid wash technique, using varying densities of ink to define the architectural mass of the tower and the surrounding buildings.
The composition relies on the interplay between the solid, dark forms of the structures and the lighter, negative space of the sky. The clock face itself is rendered with simplified, rhythmic strokes, acting as a central anchor for the viewer's eye. Kirchner avoids rigid perspective, opting instead for a subjective interpretation of the urban environment. The lines are spontaneous and direct, capturing the essence of the architecture without becoming bogged down in minute detail.
This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to translate the physical weight of stone and history into a graphic, two-dimensional format. The wash creates a sense of atmosphere, suggesting the grey, overcast light often found in the Swiss capital. By stripping away extraneous elements, Kirchner focuses on the structural rhythm of the city. The figures at the base of the tower are mere suggestions, providing a sense of scale while maintaining the focus on the built environment. This drawing offers a glimpse into the artist's process, where the act of observation is filtered through a personal, expressive visual language.
