Description
Cnoc Fyrish in the eastern Highlands frames the blue Cromarty Firth through tall stone arches, with pink heather, white flowers and long shadows across a sunlit grassy summit.
Cnoc Fyrish overlooks the Cromarty Firth above Evanton in Easter Ross. Its summit monument was commissioned by General Sir Hector Munro of Novar in the 1780s. The unusual arcade is traditionally associated with the gates of Negapatam in India, where Munro had served during his military career.
Three rough stone arches and their flanking pillars stand across the green slope, the nearest pier rising high on the right. Sunlight picks out individual pale stones, leaving deep shade inside the openings. Behind, turquoise water separates patterned fields and wooded banks. Pink flowering heather and small white blooms fill the rocky foreground, suggesting late summer warmth beneath scattered cumulus clouds.
