A detailed woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicting fishermen at work against the backdrop of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicts a coastal scene where fishermen work in unison to haul their nets from the sea. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates his mastery of the surimono style, which is characterised by high-quality printing techniques and refined composition. The scene captures the physical exertion of the labourers, who are arranged in a rhythmic line, pulling against the weight of the catch. In the background, the silhouette of Mount Fuji rises above the horizon, providing a stable anchor for the dynamic activity in the foreground.
The composition employs a clever use of perspective, with large, dark triangular shapes representing the drying nets in the immediate foreground. These forms frame the action, drawing the eye toward the workers and the distant mountain. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, earthy reds, and muted tones to convey the atmosphere of a coastal morning. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print adds a layer of literary context, a common feature in Edo-period prints that often linked visual imagery with poetry or seasonal observations.
Hokkei was known for his ability to balance technical precision with a sense of movement. In this work, the repetition of the figures creates a sense of collective effort, while the sharp, clean lines of the nets contrast with the softer, more organic shapes of the shoreline and the distant peak. The print reflects the daily life of coastal communities during the nineteenth century, offering a glimpse into the maritime industries that supported the region. This piece is a fine example of the technical capabilities of the Ukiyo-e school, showcasing the careful registration and subtle colour gradients achievable through traditional woodblock printing methods.
