A refined bird-and-flower study by Qing Dynasty artist Chen Shu, featuring a white cockatoo suspended from a flowering branch.
This work by Chen Shu, a notable female painter of the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the refined techniques characteristic of the literati tradition. The composition features a white cockatoo suspended by a chain from a flowering branch. The bird is depicted in a state of descent, its wings partially extended, creating a sense of controlled movement against the expansive, neutral background of the silk.
Chen Shu employs a delicate brush technique to define the plumage of the bird and the petals of the blossoms. The ink work is precise, showing a mastery of line that balances the weight of the subject with the negative space of the composition. The inclusion of a small insect in the lower portion of the frame adds a subtle narrative element, drawing the eye across the vertical axis of the hanging scroll.
The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones to maintain the aesthetic harmony typical of the period. The artist's signature and seal are positioned in the lower left, providing historical context and attribution. This piece reflects the scholarly interest in natural observation, where the depiction of flora and fauna serves as a study of form and character. The use of silk as a medium allows for a smooth application of ink, resulting in a finish that has aged with a characteristic patina.
Chen Shu was recognised during her lifetime for her ability to capture the essence of her subjects through careful observation and technical skill. This print preserves the subtle gradations of the original silk, offering a clear view of the artist's hand. It is a representative example of the bird-and-flower genre, which remained a popular subject for artists throughout the Qing era due to its capacity for symbolic expression and technical display.
