Etna Wiswall (1903-1985) was an American artist celebrated for her vibrant serigraphs – screen prints – that captured the essence of mid-century modernism. Though not as widely known as some of her contemporaries, Wiswall's work possesses a unique charm and technical mastery that has garnered increasing attention in recent years. She deftly employed colour and geometric forms to create images that are both abstract and evocative of the natural world, often drawing inspiration from her surroundings in New England. Wiswall's artistic journey began at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, where she honed her skills in design and composition. It was through her involvement with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression that she discovered her passion for serigraphy. The WPA's Federal Art Project provided her with the resources and platform to experiment with this relatively new medium, allowing her to develop her signature style. Her prints, such as 'Barnstable Wharf' and 'Provincetown', showcase her ability to transform everyday scenes into dynamic compositions of colour and light. Today, Etna Wiswall's serigraphs are prized for their aesthetic appeal and historical significance. They offer a glimpse into the artistic landscape of the mid-20th century and demonstrate the enduring power of printmaking as an art form. Her works are held in the collections of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, ensuring her legacy as a talented and innovative artist.
