A collaborative ink and light colour painting on silk depicting the sixteen Arhats, executed with fluid calligraphic brushwork by Suzuki Hyakunen and associates.
This work depicts the sixteen Arhats, the legendary followers of the Buddha who attained enlightenment and vowed to remain on earth to protect the dharma. Suzuki Hyakunen, a prominent figure in the Kyoto art scene during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, leads this collaborative composition. The figures are rendered with calligraphic brushwork, demonstrating the fluid control of ink characteristic of the Nanga tradition. Each Arhat possesses distinct physical features and attributes, ranging from those holding ritual implements to others accompanied by symbolic animals such as tigers and mythical beasts.
The composition organises the figures in a vertical arrangement, creating a sense of depth through the overlapping of robes and postures. The use of light colour washes against the monochrome ink provides subtle definition to the garments and facial expressions. As a collaborative piece, the work reflects the social and artistic practices of the time, where groups of painters would contribute to a single scroll to demonstrate their collective technical proficiency. The presence of multiple seals and inscriptions indicates the participation of various artists, each adding their own stylistic signature to the collective representation of these holy figures.
Suzuki Hyakunen was known for his ability to synthesise diverse influences, including the literati style and more traditional Japanese painting schools. This scroll captures the balance between individual characterisation and the unified aesthetic required for a group portrait of this nature. The silk support has aged to a soft, neutral tone, which complements the restrained palette of the ink and light pigments. The work functions as both a religious icon and a display of technical skill, offering a glimpse into the artistic culture of nineteenth-century Kyoto.
