Description

A seminal Dadaist work by Jean Arp, this collage explores the role of chance in artistic creation through the arrangement of torn paper squares.

Jean Arp created this work during the early years of the Dada movement in Zurich. The composition consists of torn paper squares, arranged on a grey background. Arp utilised the concept of chance to determine the placement of these elements, rejecting traditional notions of artistic control and deliberate composition. By allowing gravity or random selection to dictate the final arrangement, he sought to bypass the conscious mind and rational decision-making processes.

The visual result is a series of irregular, hand-torn shapes in contrasting shades of blue and white. The edges of the paper pieces remain rough, revealing the physical process of their creation. This work reflects the Dadaist interest in anti-art and the subversion of established aesthetic values. It is a direct response to the chaos of the First World War, where the logic of the modern world appeared to have failed.

Arp often described this method as a way to return to a more primitive or elemental form of expression. The lack of a central subject or perspective forces the viewer to engage with the work as a collection of shapes and textures. The balance between the dark blue squares and the lighter white ones creates a rhythmic, yet unpredictable, visual experience. This piece remains a primary example of how early twentieth-century artists experimented with randomness as a legitimate tool for artistic production, moving away from the representational traditions that dominated the preceding centuries.
