A woodblock print from the 'Shakuyakutei bunshū shohen', featuring kyōka poetry and illustrations of figures in a coastal setting.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Shakuyakutei bunshū shohen', a collection of kyōka poems compiled by the poet Shakuyakutei Nagane. Kyōka, or 'mad verse', is a form of Japanese poetry that parodies the classical waka style, often employing wit, irony, and wordplay. The publication reflects the cultural climate of late eighteenth-century Edo, where literary circles and print culture intersected to produce refined illustrated books.
The composition is presented across two pages, typical of the format for illustrated poetry anthologies of the period. On the right, a figure in formal court attire sits beside a younger companion, their gaze directed toward a distant horizon where a flock of birds is visible. The left page features a serene coastal scene, with a sandbar extending into the water and a small crustacean resting on the shore. The inclusion of calligraphy alongside the imagery is central to the work, as the text and the visual elements function as a unified aesthetic experience. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques used for high-quality literary editions.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted greens, and earthy tones to convey a sense of calm. The figures are depicted with simplified features, allowing the focus to remain on the narrative context of the poems and the atmospheric quality of the setting. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative nature of Japanese literary production, where poets and artists worked in tandem to create volumes that were as much visual objects as they were collections of verse. The work remains a representative example of the intersection between classical literary traditions and the popular print culture of the Edo period.
