A serene coastal scene by Henri Martin, capturing the chapel at Collioure through the artist's signature divisionist brushwork and warm, Mediterranean light.
Henri Martin, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, captures the quiet atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast in this depiction of the chapel at Collioure. The composition focuses on the small religious structure perched upon a rocky outcrop, overlooking the harbour. Martin employs a divisionist technique, applying small, distinct strokes of colour that interact optically when viewed from a distance. This method creates a shimmering effect across the water and the stone surfaces of the pier.
The palette is dominated by warm, sun-drenched tones, contrasting with the cooler blues and purples found in the shadows and the sea. The light suggests the late afternoon, as the sun casts long shadows across the breakwater. The chapel, with its simple form, acts as a point of stability within the fluid environment of the harbour. Two small boats with white sails are visible in the distance, providing a sense of scale and movement to the otherwise still scene.
Martin spent significant time in the south of France, and his work often reflects the specific light and geography of the region. Unlike the more rigid scientific approach of some Neo-Impressionists, Martin used his brushwork to convey a personal, atmospheric response to the environment. The texture of the paint is visible, adding a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas. This work demonstrates his interest in the relationship between architecture and the natural world, as well as his mastery of light and colour theory. The scene remains a recognisable view of the Collioure coastline, rendered with the artist's characteristic focus on light and texture.
