A rare 1857 stereoscopic photograph by Francis Frith documenting the fallen colossus at the temple of Wadi es-Sebua in Egypt.
This stereoscopic albumen print by Francis Frith captures a fallen colossus at the entrance to the temple of Wadi es-Sebua in Nubia. Frith, a prominent British photographer, undertook three major expeditions to Egypt and the Levant during the 1850s. His work provided the Victorian public with their first accurate visual records of these remote archaeological sites. The image displays the technical precision required for stereoscopic viewing, where two nearly identical photographs are mounted side by side to create a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope.
The composition features a human figure seated near the weathered stone remains, which provides a sense of scale against the massive masonry of the temple wall. The harsh, direct sunlight typical of the region creates deep shadows, defining the texture of the ancient stone blocks and the sand-covered ground. Frith often included figures in his architectural studies to animate the scene and offer a point of reference for the viewer. This photograph reflects the mid-nineteenth-century fascination with antiquity and the rapid expansion of travel photography as a medium for documentation.
Frith utilised the wet collodion process, which required him to prepare and develop glass plates on-site, often under difficult conditions in the desert heat. His ability to maintain chemical consistency while travelling by boat and camel across Egypt remains a notable aspect of his professional practice. The resulting prints are valued for their clarity and their role in shaping European perceptions of Egyptian history. This specific view of Wadi es-Sebua documents the site before later archaeological interventions, preserving a moment of quiet decay in the desert environment. The print is presented here with the original stereoscopic format, maintaining the historical integrity of the object as it would have been experienced by a contemporary collector.
