An abstract composition by Ossip Zadkine, featuring geometric forms and bold colours. This work exemplifies Zadkine's exploration of Cubism and abstraction.
Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) was a Belarussian-born artist, primarily known as a sculptor, who later became a naturalised French citizen. He explored Cubism and other avant-garde styles in his work. Zadkine's artistic output included sculpture, drawings, and prints. His work often explored themes of human form and the relationship between form and space. He taught at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. This untitled work presents an arrangement of geometric forms in a limited palette of blue, red, yellow, black, white, and brown. The composition features overlapping rectangular and curvilinear shapes, creating a sense of depth and movement. The forms are outlined with bold strokes, and the colours are applied in flat planes, characteristic of Cubist abstraction. The background is a uniform grey-blue, which serves to unify the composition.
