A modernist still life by Le Corbusier, featuring organic forms and a muted palette that reflects his transition toward a more poetic, sculptural style.
Le Corbusier, primarily known for his architectural contributions, maintained a rigorous painting practice throughout his career. This work, Composition avec la lune, demonstrates his transition from the strict geometric order of early Purism toward a more organic, sculptural vocabulary. The composition features a collection of familiar objects, including a bottle and abstract forms that suggest domestic items, arranged within a flattened pictorial space.
The artist employs a palette of muted blues, soft pinks, and earthy tones, which creates a sense of balance across the canvas. The forms are defined by clear, deliberate outlines, yet they possess a rounded, tactile quality that departs from the machine-like precision of his earlier works. The inclusion of the moon, suggested by the circular motif at the top, introduces a cosmic element to an otherwise terrestrial still life. This juxtaposition of the mundane with the celestial is characteristic of his later artistic output, where he sought to reconcile the rational with the poetic.
Le Corbusier viewed his painting as a laboratory for his architectural ideas. The way he manages the interplay of light and shadow on these simplified shapes reflects his interest in volume and mass. The composition is structured around a vertical axis, with the dark silhouette of the bottle providing a stable anchor for the more fluid, amorphous shapes surrounding it. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he focuses the viewer on the essential relationships between form, colour, and space. This print captures the precise tonal gradations and the specific, matte quality of the original oil paint, offering a clear view into the artist's private creative process.
