This 1920 oil on canvas by Sophie Taeuber-Arp exemplifies her abstract style and Dadaist sensibilities. 'Composition Dada' features geometric shapes and muted colours in a balanced, dynamic arrangement.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) was a Swiss artist, sculptor, dancer, and designer, and one of the most important figures in Dada and Constructivism. Her multidisciplinary approach integrated abstract art with applied arts. Taeuber-Arp's work challenged traditional artistic boundaries. She explored the interplay between form, colour, and space. 'Composition Dada', created in 1920, is a striking example of Taeuber-Arp's abstract style. The painting features a carefully arranged composition of geometric shapes and blocks of colour. Predominantly rendered in muted tones of red, brown, black, and cream, the artwork includes a teal, scroll-like form. The letters 'DADA' are incorporated into the design, referencing the anti-establishment art movement. The composition is both balanced and dynamic, reflecting the artist's interest in the relationship between order and chance. Taeuber-Arp's signature, 's.t.', is visible in the lower right corner.
