A modernist abstract work by Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, featuring a geometric arrangement of textures and saturated colour against a neutral ground.
Vilhelm Lundstrøm was a central figure in the development of Danish modernism. His work often reflects a rigorous engagement with the formal qualities of painting, moving away from representational subjects toward a structured exploration of shape, colour, and texture. Composition I demonstrates his interest in the synthesis of geometric forms and tactile surfaces.
The painting features a muted, grey-toned background that provides a neutral stage for the interplay of more aggressive, saturated elements. Lundstrøm employs a variety of textures, including areas that suggest collage or mixed media, such as the dotted vertical strip and the mesh-like patterns on the right. These elements disrupt the flatness of the canvas, creating a tension between the two-dimensional surface and the implied depth of the layered forms. The palette relies on a contrast between the cool, atmospheric grey and the warm, energetic tones of red and yellow.
Lundstrøm spent significant time in France during the early 1920s, where he encountered the developments of Cubism and Purism. This exposure is evident in the calculated arrangement of the geometric components within this work. Rather than seeking to depict a specific object, the artist focuses on the relationship between the individual parts of the composition. The result is a balanced yet dynamic arrangement that invites the viewer to consider the physical properties of the paint and the construction of the image itself. This piece represents a period of experimentation where Lundstrøm refined his approach to abstraction, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential architecture of the visual field.
