Description

A 1950 composition by Mario Sironi, featuring schematic figures and architectural motifs rendered in an expressive, modern style with earthy tones.

This work by Mario Sironi, dating to 1950, reflects the artist's later period, where his approach to form became increasingly schematic and symbolic. Sironi, a major figure in twentieth-century Italian art, moved away from the monumental, classicising style of his earlier career towards a more fragmented, expressive visual language. The composition is divided into distinct zones, with a vertical panel on the left containing stacked, rhythmic motifs and a larger, horizontal field on the right populated by simplified human figures, architectural silhouettes, and abstract shapes. The palette is grounded in earthy ochres and browns, punctuated by stark white outlines and accents of deep red and muted green. The figures are rendered with a calligraphic economy, reduced to essential gestures that suggest movement and interaction without relying on anatomical precision. A church-like structure appears on the right, a recurring motif in Sironi's work that speaks to his interest in the relationship between human presence and the built environment. The application of paint is direct, with visible brushwork that maintains the materiality of the surface. By this stage in his career, Sironi had largely abandoned the rigid geometry of his earlier Futurist and Novecento Italiano phases. Instead, he embraced a more personal, almost archaic mode of expression. The work functions as a collection of signs or a visual diary, where the arrangement of elements creates a sense of narrative ambiguity. The contrast between the dense, patterned left section and the more open, atmospheric right side creates a tension that draws the viewer across the canvas. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's late-career shift toward a more introspective and experimental aesthetic, prioritising symbolic weight over representational accuracy.
