This work by Kazimir Malevich exemplifies Suprematism, an abstract art movement focused on basic geometric forms. The composition features a cluster of geometric shapes arranged dynamically against a white background, evoking the sensation of flight.
Kazimir Malevich, a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist, developed Suprematism around 1913. This abstract art movement focused on basic geometric forms, such as circles, squares, lines, and rectangles, painted in a limited range of colours. Malevich sought to convey pure feeling through non-objective forms, liberating art from representational constraints. He believed that Suprematist art could access a higher spiritual realm. 'Composition of Suprematist Elements (Feeling of Flight)' exemplifies Malevich's Suprematist principles. The composition features a cluster of geometric shapes, predominantly rectangles and lines, arranged dynamically against a white background. The largest shape, resembling a cross or an abstracted aeroplane, dominates the upper-left quadrant. The arrangement suggests a sense of movement and weightlessness, evoking the sensation of flight. The limited palette of black and white further emphasises the purity of form and the absence of representational content.
