Theo van Doesburg's 'Composition X' (1920) embodies the De Stijl movement with its grid-like structure, geometric forms, and limited colour palette of black, grey, and white.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist who practised painting, writing, poetry and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leading theorist of De Stijl, a movement advocating pure abstraction and universality through a reduction to essential forms and colours. Van Doesburg sought a total art that integrated life and art, influencing the Bauhaus movement. His work aimed to create a harmonious balance between form and function. 'Composition X', painted in 1920, exemplifies Van Doesburg's commitment to the principles of De Stijl. The painting is composed of a grid-like structure of black lines and rectangles, interspersed with blocks of grey and white. The composition is carefully balanced, with the placement of each element contributing to an overall sense of harmony and order. The use of a limited colour palette and geometric forms reflects the movement's desire to create a universal visual language, free from subjective expression.
